Ruth M.H. Markunas, 96, of Machesney Park, IL died peacefully Wed. June 29, 2011 in her home. Born Jan 31, 1915 in Rockford, the daughter of Gustav and Hilda (Lindgren) Berglund. Ruth moved with her family to Gamleby, Sweden as a small child. She returned to Rockford as a young adult. Married Albert Markunas on Sept. 5, 1936 in Belvidere. Ruth will be remembered as a strong, fun-loving and adventurous woman. She was proud of her Scandinavian heritage. carrying the customs through her life and sharing them with others. She was a member of the Swedish Historical Society and Harmony Singing Society, regularly listened to the Salvation Army Swedish church service, hosted smorgasbords and crayfish boils by the river, and leaves behind many pieces of Swedish craftmanship. She was an accomplished professional seamstress for more than 20 years. She also worked at Colorcraft after the death of her husband.

Survivors include her children, Jean (Bob) Chanson, Al (Sue) Markunas, Joan (John) Hurd and Ruthanne (Jim McEachran) Markunas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Al; daughter, Delette; son, Charles; sister; Elna Pearson; and brother, Walter, Henry, Sven and Thor Berglund.
