Marital Rift is Attributed Cause of Triple Tragedy
Charleston, MO, May 11 -- (AP) -- Eskell F. Banks, 36, unemployed St. Louisian, shot and killed his estranged wife, Virginia, aged 28, his brother-in-law, Dan Watson, 47, wounded Watson's wife Zelma, 22, and then sent a bullet into his own heart at the Watson home here last night, Sheriff J. E. Scott said.
Mrs. Watson was taken to a hospital in Cairo, Illinois, where doctors said her chances for recovery are fair. She suffered a bullet wound in the lower abdomen.
The shooting, the sheriff said, occurred in the presence of Banks' two children, Edward 8 and Estell 6, Mr. and Mrs. Watson's two children, Betty 17 and Kenneth 6, and Watson's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Watson.
The sheriff said he learned Banks, who resides at 2313 South Third, St. Louis, came here late yesterday and went to the Watson home after being served in St. Louis with notice that his wife had sued him for a divorce. She and the children came to Charleston about a week ago.
When he stepped up on the porch one of his children exclaimed "There's Daddy," and ran to him. He walked into the house and when his wife approached and demanded that he "Put away that gun and get out," he shot her.
The sheriff said Banks' son Edward told him that, "Daddy shot Mommy, and she fell. I kissed her and she died."
Banks then went into another room where Mrs. Watson was trying to telephone relatives, and shot her. He then turned his gun on Watson and shot twice.
The sheriff said Banks then left and walked down the street toward the home of another relative but retraced his steps suddenly. When he reached the Watson home again, the sheriff and two other officers, who had been notified, drove up just as Banks turned his gun on himself.
Banks and Watson were married to sisters. Watson owned a saw mill in Charleston.
Mrs. Banks parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. [sic; H. J.] Marney, reside at Delia, Kansas, while Banks' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Banks, reside in St. Louis [Missouri].
