Dr. Marshall, Ex-N.Y. Giant Player, Dies
Dr. W.R. Marshall, 84, a former professional baseball player who had practiced me4dicine in Clinton for 45 years, died at 4 a.m. today in his home.
Dr. Marshall was in the major leagues for 11 years before becoming a doctor. He played with the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Dr. Marshall was a member of John McGraw's Giants of 1905, serving as catcher. He went to the Giants in the same deal that sent pitcher Christy Matthewson to the team.
A native of Butler County, PA., Dr. Marshall graduated from Slippery Rock Normal College, Slippery Rock, PA. After teaching school for two years, he went to work for the Carnegie Steel Co. in Homestead, PA.
Leaving there, he entered professional baseball and was a catcher, first baseman and outfielder in his major league career.
While playing professional ball, he began studying medicine, graduating from the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery in 1909. He served his internship at Cooper Hospital, Camden, N.J.
In 1913, Dr. Marshall arrived in Clinton and purchased the practice of D. M.J. Babcock. He was joined in the practice by his brother, Dr. E.H. Marshall, in 1919.
Dr. Marshall was active in Clinton civic affairs. He served on the YMCA board of directors, the Chamber of Commerce board of directors and as vice president of the Dewitt County Tuberculosis Assn.
He was also a past president of the Dewitt County Medical Assn. and served as its secretary for 26 years. He also served on committees of the Illinois State Medical Society and the state Tuberculosis Association.
Dr. Mashall continued his practice until he became seriously ill about a year ago.
He leaves his wife, Alma; a sister, Mrs. Emma Pierce, Corpus Christi, Tex.; and two brothers, Dr. E.H., Clinton and James Butler, PA.
Funeral servies will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Pullen-Boos Chapel, Clinton. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
