John Robert Mason, born in New Market (Madison County), Alabama, was the fifth of nine children of Samuel and Martha Jane Manning Mason. He married Florence Stoner. John and Florence spent the early part of their marriage in Huntsville, Alabama, before moving in the mid 1920s to Memphis and then on to Mississippi. John and Florence had three children: Marion Juanita Mason, who died at birth, Grace Mason Maynor, and John Forrest Mason.
