Excerpt -- Washington, D.C. -- John Edward Mattingly, 85, died here yesterday of pneumonia after a long illness. He was born in Howesville, Preston County, W.Va., in 1862. For nine years he was associated with the Austin, W.Va. coke works. He was manager of a store for Dobin Lumber for another nine years, and then he moved to Fairmont, where he was with various mercantile interests. In 1907 he moved to Morgantown to become general store manager for the West Virginia Mercantile Company. In 1939 he moved to Washington, with his daughter, Pauline, an instructor of music at Wilson Teachers' College. He was a member of the Morgantown Lodge of the Elks. He is survived by his widow, Emma (Gocke) Mattingly; two daughters, Mrs. David B. Reger, Morgantown, and Pauline Mattingly; and a nephew, Paul H. Gocke, Washington.
