GARDNER - Dorothy A. (McCarthy) Anderson, 78, of 386 Whitney St., a retired clerk, died Tuesday evening at home after an illness.

Her husband of 50 years, Paul H. Anderson, died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Paul H. Anderson Jr. of East Templeton and Jon W. Anderson of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, E. Ingrid Anderson of Weathersfield Bow, Vt.; a sister, Beverly Krushinsky of Kenosha, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Suzanne Lauer of East Templeton, died in 1997. She was born in New York City, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Soucy) McCarthy, and moved here in 1941.

Mrs. Anderson was a clerk at S. Bent Brothers Inc. Chair Manufacturers until her retirement. She previously worked with her late husband at Anderson's Poultry Farm and as a nurse's aide at Heywood Hospital.

She was a former member of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church. A volunteer for the Gardner Visiting Nursing Association and an active member of the Gardner Chapter American Association of Retired Persons, she was awarded with certificates of appreciation from both organizations. She was also a past matron of Jessamine Chapter #75 Order of Eastern Star. In 1994, she was awarded the Rose Medallion from the General Grand Chapter in Washington, D.C. For many summers, she was a clerk-receptionist at Splitrock Scout Camp, Ashburnham.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. Burial will be in Green Bower Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. The Jessamine Chapter will conduct Eastern Star services at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Jessamine Chapter O.E.S., Eastern Star Scholarship Society, 42 Central St., or to the Gardner Visiting Nursing Association, 34 Pearly Lane, both Gardner, MA 01440.
