Born 1 of 6 children of Sidney B. and Maud Lucille (Reeves) McSwain, she was a 1929 Pond Creek High School graduate and a graduate of OBU, B.A./music and education, in 1944. She taught in Riverdale, Pond Creek, and Cherokee schools.
In 1946 she moved to Purcell and married Wm Vernon Bass, on May 25, 1946, and taught in Dibble and Purcell schools for 15 years. After she left teaching, she gave private piano lessons for the next 18 years.
As an active member of the Baptist Church she taught in every Sunday school department and planned funeral luncheons for 55 years; was church organist for 28 years; and organist for Yoakum Funeral Home, Purcell, for 35 years.
For over 25 years, she was a member of the Gladiolus Garden Club; over 50 years, Okeyha Mothers Club and Purcell Eastern Star; and Kappa Kappa Iota, Retired Teachers Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon, on Sept. 9, 1992; her son, Bill, on March 13, 2003; her step-daugher, Bobbie; brothers, Bird, Joe and Frank; half-sisters, Kate Metcalf and Flora Bowling, and half-brother, Foster.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Linda Bass, Natchitoches, La.; 2 grandchildren; sister, Imogene Dawson and brother, Bill.
Pallbearers were Bob Barnett, Larry Melton, Eugene Howard, Frank Conway, Alton Dragoo, and Michael Dillinger.
