Mary Jane McSwain was born 20 October 1918 in Cross Hill, South Carolina, the daughter of Horace Laurens McSwain (1879-1938) and Virginia J. Black McSwain (1880-1918). Her mother succumbed to peritonitis when she was just 10 months old. Lena Madden McSwain (1885-1977), her father's second wife, was her stepmother. She married Harry Nathan Coward (1919-2009) on 17 May 1941 in Greer, Greenville County, SC. They had a daughter, Virginia Sue (1942-2020) and a son, John Earl "Johnny" (1946-2003). She died on 17 February 1999 in Spartanburg, SC at the age of 80 and was interred at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
