Monument. Located in Laboe, near Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the memorial was completed in 1936 and dedicated to German sailors killed in World War I (1914 - 1918). After World War II, the allied countries realized it was not a tribute to the Nazi Third Reich region but as a naval memorial to the warfare fallen in German history. Thus in 1952, the Laboe Naval Memorial became a place to commemorate every fallen sailors of all nationalities. It serves in recognition to all world fallen soldiers both in the merchant marine and in war. The Laboe Naval Memorial tower contains wreaths from all over the world, a museum, exhibits, paintings as well as every flag that was used by the German Navy since 1657. At the Baltic Sea, every ship passing the Nordsea, rings their bells and tip their flags in honor as they come across the memorial. In the last decades, the memorial has achieved International significance and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
