Mrs. Bennie Lou Merrick Ailes, 74, of Red Cloud, Nebraska, formerly of Conway County, Arkansas died October 28. She was born in Lanty, Arkansas August 18, 1917, a daughter of James Monroe and Lillie Adams Merrick. She was a graduate of Morrilton High School and Arkansas State Teachers College and taught business courses and coached basketball at Wonderview High School (AR). She was the widow of Millard C. Ailes who retired from the Army in 1956 when the family moved to Red Cloud. She taught at Cowles High School in 1958-59. She served as Webster County (NE) school superintendent from 1962 until 1966, when she resigned to become Webster County welfare director, a position she held on her retirement in 1979. She was a member of Congregational Christian Church at Red Cloud and was a member of Eastern Star. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Ailes of Richmond, Va., and Virginia Hoelscher of Williams, Iowa, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were October 21 at the Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Kenneth Doughman. Burial was at Red Cloud Cemetery by Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud.
