Pauline Ahlgrim Nelson

Pauline Ahlgrim Nelson, 79, of Valparaiso, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2010.
She is survived by her husband of six years, Russell D. Nelson, her children Patricia A. "Pat" Pullara, Robert A. (Maureen) Ahlgrim, Kathleen S. (Lawrence "Beef") Thompson, all of Valparaiso, Christina L. Urbanski of Orland Park, IL, Melissa (Russ) Reed of Texas, her sister Barbara (Edward) Coulter, Valparaiso, grandchildren; Kimberly (Jeff) Terrill of Ft. Wayne, Todd Pullara of Richmond, VA, Tracy (Ken) Krieser of Valparaiso, Elizabeth Urbanski of Orland Park, IL, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 54 years, Robert L. Ahlgrim, and parents William Bilhorn and Roberta (Clem) Bilhorn Metcalfe.
Pauline will be remembered by many for her dedication and commitment to the community. She volunteered and often took a leadership role in promoting several local organizations. She served as President of the League of Women Voters. She was appointed and subsequently elected to the Valparaiso City Council and Porter County Council, where she held the distinction of becoming the first woman elected to the Councils. Due to her political knowledge, she served on many local, state and national election campaigns, including Senator Birch Bayh, Governor Evan Bayh, and Congressmen Floyd Fithian and Jim Jontz. She served on the City Board of Works, the Fire Department Board and the Airport Board. Pauline was instrumental in promoting and establishing the Sunset Hill County Park, as well as the Porter County Expo Center. After her retirement from the American Cancer Society, Pauline worked on a variety of projects and was most recently involved with the VNA in their annual flu vaccination program. Pauline and Russell spent several happy years traveling with their primary destination being Ajijic, Mexico where they both shared a love of the local people, art and culture. Pauline was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso.
Visitation will be from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Bartholomew Funeral Home, 102 E Monroe St. in Valparaiso with funeral services following at 3:00 PM Saturday. Pastor Wayne Rhodes will officiate.
Her final resting place will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Christian Community Action, 2001 Calumet Ave. VNA Hospice, 2402 Valparaiso St. or The Caring Place, 3107 Cascade Drive, all in Valparaiso.
