"EMMA MILLER, ACTIVE YOUTH WORKER, DIES
Mrs. Emma R. Miller, known for her outstanding and devoted work with the youth of this community, died at the Clay County Hospital at 10:30 last night. Mrs. Miller, 74 years old, had been in failing health since June of last year. She entered the hospital on April 14 for treatment.

Mrs. Miller was the daughter of Phillip and Ethea Harden Roberts. She was born in Carbon February 19, 1891, and had spent her entire life as a resident of Clay County.

Mrs. Miller attended Indiana State Normal and taught school at School No. 9, north of Carbon and at schools at Lena and Pontiac, prior to her marriage to William E. Miller on April 27, 1913. Mr. and Mrs. Miller celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1963.

The Millers resided at 616 S. Forest Avenue in Brazil.

An active member of the First Methodist Church, Mrs. Miller gave much of her time teaching classes during Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the women's circles of the church and in October, 1963, she received a gold pin from the local W.S.C.S. for her outstanding work and service. She also received at that time a certificate of merit from the Northwest Indiana Conference, Woman's Division of Christian Service.

Mrs. Miller received recognition for her work in Jobs Daughters, having organized the first chapter in Brazil and having served as the first guardian of Bethel No. 29. She was past worthy matron of Chapter No. 80, Order of Eastern Star and was presented with her fifty-year membership on November 22, 1963.

Always interested in the Clay County Home Demonstration Club program, she was a member of the Happy Housewives Club. She was also a member of the Home and Garden Club. She had been awarded a twenty-year leadership plaque from Purdue University for her fine work with 4-H clubs. She served the Strivers 4-H Club for 23 years as their leader.

Through her tireless efforts, Mrs. Miller has guided innumerable boys and girls into adulthood, giving them the best of her abilities as a teacher and friend. It would be impossible to estimate the number of youths who have been helped by her leadership.

Surviving are: the husband, William E. Miller, retired mail carrier; three daughters, Mrs. H.R. (Virginia) Ireland, Brazil; Mrs. Dwayne (Helen) Lewis, Flint, Michigan; Mrs. Don (Phyllis) Davis, Tampa, Florida; one siser, Mrs. Ruth Reckerd, Brazil; and eight grandchildren.

Servies will be conducted at the Moore Funeral Home at :00 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Samuel Carlton, pastor of First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Calcutta Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Bowles, Winfred Niswonger, Glenn Robertson, Charles Mercer, V.O. Self, and Earl Shofer.

Brazil Chapter, No. 80, Order of Eastern Star, will hold memorial services at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may call after noon Wednesday."
