Patricia M. Hawley, 79, died of natural causes on March 18 at a local hospital. Mrs. Hawley was born on May 27, 1926 in Phoenix, AZ, the daughter of Senator Bert H. and Carolyn Hopkins Miller.
After graduating from Boise High School, she continued her education at the University of Idaho, ultimately earning her bachelors degree in political science, with an emphasis in international relations, from the University of California, Berkeley in 1948. After graduation, she married James H. Hawley, Jr. of Boise, the beginning of a 50-year love affair that lasted until Mr. Hawley's death in November 1998.
As the daughter of an Idaho pioneer family, Mrs. Hawley proved herself to be a pioneer in every sense of the word. In the 1960's, she and her husband started and built Hawley Insurance Agency, the largest single-agent insurance brokerage in the state at the time of its sale. In the early 1970's, she worked as an educational specialist with the Mountain-Plains Education and Economic Development Program, a federally funded project that provided training and employment to disadvantaged families. In the late 1970's, she served as the chief-of-staff to Governor John V. Evans, becoming the first female to serve an Idaho governor in that capacity. In the 1980's, she worked as state director of the Pacific Northwest Regional Commission, a federal-state agency responsible for economic planning and development in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Mrs. Hawley was active in Idaho Democratic politics throughout her entire life, volunteering many hours to fund-raising and numerous political campaigns, including those of her husband as a candidate for the United States Congress in 1950, and her son James as a candidate for the Idaho Legislature in 1970.
Survivors include son James and his wife Marilyn; son Christopher and his wife Patricia; two grandchildren; and three nephews.
