Professional Football Player. Born Robert Edward Momsen, he attended Edward D. Libbey High School in Toledo and played collegiate football at Ohio State University. While with the Buckeyes, he achieved All-American honors and was a member of their 1949 squad that defeated California 17 to 14 in the Rose Bowl game in January 1950. He was a participant in the famous contest referred to as the "Snow Bowl," in which Ohio State played the University of Michigan during a blinding blizzard on November 25, 1950. During that game, he was pitted against his older brother Tony Momsen, who played for the opposition, and the end result would be the Wolverines defeating the Buckeyes 9 to 3, denying Ohio State the Big Ten Conference Championship Title. Momsen was chosen by Detroit during the 7th round of the 1951 NFL Draft and would play two seasons (1951 to 1952) in the National Football League. He appeared in 12 games at the middle-linebacker position with the Lions during the 1951 season, joining a core that included Dick Flanagan and LaVern "Torgy" Torgeson, while earning All-Pro status that season. He played in 10 games at the middle-guard position during the 1952 season with the San Francisco 49ers before retiring. After his football career, Momsen (who earned a Masters Degree in Education) worked as a teacher and coach in Toledo for 30 years. He was inducted into the Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
