Auguste was the daughter of Friedrich Ludwig Carstensen and Laura Ingwersen, of Bredstedt, Nordfriesland, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She arrived in America, at the age of 19, on July 2, 1909 on the ship Pennsylvania, out of Hamburg, Germany. The port of arrival was New York, New York, but her destination was Chicago, Illinois. Her older brothers, Paul and John had been sent to America before her, to the home of their uncle, Christian August Ingwersen, who was living in Chicago, Illinois. Auguste parents were still living in Bredstedt, Germany.

By 1925, she was married to Lorenz Momsen, with their children in Everly, Clay County, Iowa. In 1930, the family was living in Lone Tree, Clay County, Iowa. Their children include: Edward Lorenz Momsen, born 1917, Helen Louise Momsen, born 1919, Karl Ervin Momsen, born 1923, and Harold Eugene Momsen, born 1929.
