Madison Welsh Monnett was born in Marion County Ohio in August 1851. He was the elder of twin boys (Melvin Monnette being the younger) born to Abraham and Catherine Monnett.

Raised on the family farm in Scott Township, instead of farming he chose to be employed on the banking side of the families holdings. He married Rosalie Amanda Brewer of Grand Prairie Township, Marion County Ohio. Following her death, and left with a son and a daughter to raise, Madison remarried, however that union resulted in a divorce. Following the banking panics in the 1890s, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he established a patent medicine business.

He married a third time in Indianapolis to Isabel Herron, a native of Great Britain.

Following his death, Monnett's body was returned to Bucyrus for burial at Monnett Cemetery next to his first wife, however a headstone was never placed on his grave.

Following the death of Isabel Herron Monnett, her body was returned to Monnett Cemetery for burial. Like her husband, her grave is unmarked.
