Humberto Montano Teran, age 81, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., went unexpectedly to be with the Lord at 12:06 p.m. Dec. 28, 2015, at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, with his family at his side. The end was quick and without pain.
Humberto was born July 7, 1934, in Moctezuma, Sonora, Mexico, to his parents, both deceased, Manuel and Romula Teran.
He married in Douglas, Ariz., to Elda Gabilondo on Aug. 11, 1956. Humberto graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in education in May 1958.
He worked for the large accounting firm Arthur Anderson and was proud to be the first Mexican-American hired by their Houston office. He got a CPA license in Texas in 1960, and then received a CPA license in Arizona in 1962. He finalized a master’s degree in accounting in 1964 from the University of Arizona.
He then managed many real estate management projects throughout Arizona before moving back to Douglas to manage two different twin plants in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. Then, in subsequent years, he became self-employed, opening his own office in Douglas, where he became a real estate broker, insurance broker, and CPA until he retired and moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz., in 2002. He also served as a proud member of the Arizona Ground Water Management Commission from 1977 to 1980, appointed by then-governor Raul Castro.
Throughout his life he worked with the church and helped people in need. This included work with the Douglas St. Vincent DePaul, Arizona prison ministry in Cochise County, and as a volunteer with the Sierra Vista hospice. He was well known for his generosity and humorous nature.
Humberto was a loving father and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elda; one daughter, Elda and husband Kirby Chapman; and two sons, Pete Montano and Joe Montano. He has seven grandchildren, Enrique Leon (d), Lisa Leon, Moriah Montano, Devon Montano, Joseph Montano, Christopher Montano, and Laura Montano; and six great-grandchildren, Daniel Salomon, Jaxon Halweg, Theo Halweg, Keira Halweg, Chloe Montano, and Claire Montano.
Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, Sierra Vista. A rosary will start at 10:30 a.m., immediately followed by a funeral Mass of Christian Burial, with a small luncheon afterwards in the hall. We welcome everyone to attend.
