Mrs. Annie Montgomery Benson, a resident of Pacific Grove since 1919 and one of the founding members of the neighbors’ Club, died this morning in a local rest home. Mrs. Benson had been in failing health for some time. She celebrated her 99th birthday last Feb. 25, surrounded by floral tributes from her friends and her daughter, the well-known author, Anne Fisher (Mrs. W.K. Fisher) at her beside. Mrs. Benson was a native of Yrok, England, where she was born in 1855, and came to this country as the 19-year-old bride of the late Lorenzo Benson. Both became U.S. citizens. They made their home in Denver, Colo., where mr. Benson followed his profession as an architect for many years. The family spent summers in Pacific Grove frequently from 1906 on bringing their youngest daughter, Anne, here as a small child. Mr. Benson’s death occurred in 1913, and his widow came six years later to establish her home at 745 Sinex Ave., where her English garden was one of the show spots of the area for many years. In association with the late Miss Julia Platt, Mrs. Benson helped organize the Neighbor’s Club in the mid-‘20s, and the two women cleaned up Lovers Point, building the rock garden there with their own hands, later cleaning up and improving Caledonia Park as well. Always an ardent gardener, Mrs. Benson raised and sold seedlings to help finance the Neighbors’ Club improvement projects. In addition to Mrs. Fisher, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Jack Bickford of Portland, Ore.; a son, Lorenzo M. Benson of Monte Vista, Colo.; and a granddaughter, Mrs. Joseph Garrett of Los Angeles. Private funeral services were held today in the Little Chapel by-the-Sea Crematorium. The Paul Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
