Sue Murphy Hiser, 95, of Williamsport, Md., passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at Homewood at Williamsport.
Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Franklin, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Thomas Murphy and Lena Mae (Mitchell) Murphy.
As a child, Sue moved to Windsor, N.C., where she graduated from Bertie County High School in 1935.
Her first job after graduation was as society page editor for the Bertie County Ledger. Following the outbreak of World War II, Sue moved to Arlington, Va., serving as a civilian employee for the Department of the Army as an accounts-payable clerk.
Sue married Col. Charles H. Hiser on April 18, 1948, at the Old Post Chapel on Arlington Hall, Fort Myer, Va. They were happily married for 40 years, raising two wonderful children. During Charles' military career, they were stationed all over the world.
Sue was a devoted homemaker. She was active in the Army Officers' Wives Woman's Club, Gray Ladies and the Military Officers Association of America.
She was a lifelong member of Windsor United Methodist Church in Windsor, and attended Annandale United Methodist Church in Annandale, Va.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan H. Latimer and husband, John A. Latimer III; son, Charles H. Hiser III; four grandchildren, John A. Latimer IV and wife, Cassandra H. Latimer, Amy L. Hodge and husband, Joseph W. Hodge II, Charles H. Hiser IV and Sarah A. Hiser; three great-grandchildren, Emma C. Hodge, Austin M. Latimer and William H. Hodge; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 10 a.m., and a memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md. Another memorial service in her hometown of Windsor is being planned, and the interment is to follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
