Mrs. Berg, 90, formerly a longtime resident of LeRoy, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2008) at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn.
Alvira Marie Niemeyer was born Oct. 26, 1918, in Lindsay, Neb. On Oct. 23, 1935, she married Arthur J. Berg in St. Bernard, Neb. The couple lived in Rising City, Neb., and moved to rented land near Humphrey, Neb., to farm for seven years. In 1946 they bought a farm near LeRoy. They moved to LeRoy in 1948 and farmed for 20 years. In 1968 they moved to an acreage west of LeRoy. Her husband died in 1984 though Mrs. Berg remained on the farm until 1989, at which time she moved to Riverside Apartments in LeRoy.
She endeared herself with her cooking and became known as the "pie queen of LeRoy." In 2000 she suffered some health problems and shortly thereafter moved to Minneapolis to live with her oldest son and his wife. However, she returned to LeRoy as often as she could to visit with her friends at the senior dinners and at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, William J. (Pat) of Minneapolis, David J. (Diane) of Cresco, Iowa, Arthur E. (Pat) of Durango, Colo., and Harold R. (Mary Ann) of Ahsahka, Idaho; a daughter, Caroline (Joe) Zastrow of Mooresville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lidvene VanDyke of Omaha, Neb., and Patricia (Don) Adleman of Madison, Neb.; and a brother, Carroll John (Madeline) Niemeyer of Lindsay, Neb. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Mary; and her parents, John and Caroline (Niehaber) Niemeyer.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hindt Funeral Home in LeRoy, and an hour before the service Monday at the church. There will be a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
