He married Rebecca Grimm and fathered John Quincy (b. 12/25/57), Louisa Ann Elizabeth "Lucy" (b. 11/15/59 - married Tempest Harry Chronister), George Washington (b. 01/08/62), and Ellen (b. @1864). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Hamilton Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted by the state, although the date is uncertain. According to the 1863 draft registration, he was drafted at the stated age of forty-four November 14, 1862, but the muster roll claims March 5, 1863, the same day he mustered into state service at Harrisburg as a private with Luther's Independent Militia Company. He honorably discharged with the company July 23, 1863.

He died at his son George's home at the reported age of 83-9-18.
