Dolores was the eldest child of Miguel and Carmen Avila. She moved with her parents to Canoga Park, in the San Fernando Valley, Calif., where the family grew to include two brothers and six sisters. Dolores attended Canoga Park High School, and as a young woman enacted the part of the Virgin Mary in Canoga Park's Christmas Pageant.
Dolores met her future husband, Pedro Ontiveros, when her father hired him to give her violin lessons. The young couple married in 1935, and had been married for 72 years when Pedro passed away in 2007.
Pedro and Dolores left Canoga Park and moved to West Los Angeles, where Dolores raised her daughters and then worked in the aerospace industry as a secretary. In later years Dolores also worked as an instructional aide in a local English as a Second Language program.
Both Pedro and Dolores were active members of the Mexican American Baptist Church in West Los Angeles, Trinity Baptist Church in Santa Monica, and after moving to Camarillo they continued their Baptist affiliation at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Dolores was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the center of her family and loved by all.
Dolores is survived by a brother, Raymond Avila, sister, Mary Avila Martinez; daughters Olivia Hartman, Marie Dolores Everett, and Christine Van; sons-in-law Stuard Hartman, Douglas Everett, and James Van; grandchildren Peter Wood, Lorraine Wood Newberry, Paul Wood, Armando Wood, Frank Wood, Cristina Everett Ehlers, Joseph Everett, Carmen Van O'Neill, and Devin Van; great-grandchildren Nicole, Jesse, Lisa, Olivia, Joseph, Natasha, Ashlee, Alexis, Jacqueline, Armando Jr., Caitlin, Jack, Peter, Kelly Marie and August.
The family has arranged private services. Assisting the family with arrangements is Conejo Mountain Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, Ca 805-482-1959.
