Camille G. Jones, a beloved wife, mother, and retired Detroit educator, passed away in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 1, 2013 surrounded by her family.
Camille G. Patterson was born on August 23, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the seventh of eight children to Josephine Helen Lowe Patterson and Frank William Patterson, Sr. Raised by her maternal aunt Clara Louise Lowe Overall and uncle Arthur Overall in Nashville, Tennessee, Camille was a brilliant student who graduated from Pearl High School at the age of 13. She attended Fisk University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in 1946 with a double major in Mathematics and Art. She completed graduate studies at the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, earning her Master of Science degree in Mathematics in 1948.
Camille enjoyed a distinguished career as an educator in the Detroit Public Schools system: Mathematics teacher at Northern High School, Mathematics Department Head at Southeastern High School, Assistant Principal at Barbour Middle School, Assistant Principal at Kettering High School, Principal at Ruddiman Middle School, and ultimately Principal at Renaissance High School from 1989 until her retirement in 1993.
Heralded as inspiring, caring, and firm, "Mrs. Jones" propelled generations of Detroit public school students to success by holding them to the same high standards to which she held her own three daughters. Socially and civically active in Detroit, Camille was a founding member of the Great Lakes Chapter of the Links, Inc. in 1993. She was an active member of the Auxiliary to the Detroit Medical Society, the Detroit Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., the Sorosis Literary and Art Club, and the Pilot Club at Plymouth United Church of Christ, and was a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. A master bridge player, she was a member of several bridge clubs including a Couples Club for duplicate bridge and the Urbanite Bridge Club. She was also an active spouse with the Iota Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity ("the Boule"), the Moors, the Rogues, and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. She was an amazing artist with knitting and crochet, and was recognized for her beautiful attire, elegant interior design, and gracious hospitality.
Camille and Arnold moved to Atlanta, Georgia in March 2011 to be closer to their grandchildren. She leaves behind her a legacy of unconditional love, positive thinking, creativity, brilliance, warmth, and very high standards.
Camille Greta Patterson Jones was survived by her soul mate for more than 60 years Dr. Arnold M. Jones, their three daughters Dr. Camara Jones (Herbert), Dr. Camille Jones, and Dr. Clara Jones, son-in-law Dr. Herbert Singleton, grandchildren Calah Singleton and Malcolm Singleton, sister Helen Wright, and many other loving relatives, friends, former students, and colleagues. Her Celebration of Life service was held at Plymouth United Church of Christ in Detroit, Michigan on May 10, 2013.
