Bernice Edith Crockett Payne , a longtime educator in the Mobile County public school system, died Sunday at a local hospital. She was 80.
Mrs. Payne , a native and resident of Mobile, was employed by Jessie B. Coleman's Day Care Center.
She served for 37 years as a sixth-grade teacher at Rosa A. Lott Elementary School, Chickasaw Terrace Elementary School and Mobile County Training School.
She was a member of Big Zion AME Zion Church and the Mobile County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Sybil Payne Whitfield of Mobile; a brother, Thomas Crockett of Mount Vernon; and a number of grandchildren.
Viewing will be at Big Zion AME Zion Church, 110 S. Bayou St., beginning at 9 a.m. Friday with visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery with Johnson-Allen Mortuary directing.
