MILDRED BERNICE ECHOLS, 87, of HOWELL, died Sunday, June 17, at Care One at Jackson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Jackson. Mildred was born Jan. 16, 1920, to Frank and Blanche Pennington in Clayton. The second of eight children, she was raised in Little Silver and Tinton Falls. She attended school in Tinton Falls and Red Bank, graduating from Red Bank High School in January 1939.

On March 24, 1944, Mildred was united in marriage to Edward H. Echols in Atlanta. Mildred and Edward made their home in Long Branch for the next 40 years. This union was blessed with eight children. After Edward's death, Mildred moved to Salisbury and then Jessup, Md., and in 2003, she returned to New Jersey. Mildred spent most of her life as a homemaker and mother. She created a home in which her children and their friends spent many hours and enjoyed her good humor and creativity. The children also benefited by her wisdom and innate ability to create an atmosphere where discipline and order were achieved without the need for tyranny. Her love of children and her unfailing good will expanded to include not only her children, but also their friends and her many nieces and nephews, making the house on Hendrickson Avenue the place to gather after school, on weekends and during summer vacations. Mildred was also active in the community and gave her time and energy to many organizations. She was a member and president of the PTA at Gregory Primary School and was active as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout troop leader. She remained active in Girl Scouts for many years and was a member of the Girl Scout Alumni Association. Mildred had a love of music and possessed a clear strong singing voice. She shared her gift with others. She was a member of the senior choir at Trinity A.M.E. Church, Long Branch, for many years. Mildred was employed as a nurse's aide at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, in the 1960s. She and Edward also owned and operated Echols' Tavern, Long Branch, where Mildred demonstrated that she had not lost her skill in keeping order by always being a lady, deserving of respect and therefore receiving it.

Mildred was predeceased by Edward, in 1984; and her son, Robert Echols, in 1995. Surviving are her children, Elsie Lopez of Reisterstown, Md., Edward Echols of Long Branch, Gloria Echols of Philadelphia, David Echols of Jessup, Md., James Echols of Puyallup, Wash., Richard Echols of Hillsborough, and Barbara Lindsey of Howell, with whom she resided; three sisters, Ethel Williams of New Castle, Del., Mary Keyes of Burlington, and Ruth Jones of Richmond, Va.; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends and family may call from noon Saturday until her funeral service at 1 p.m. at James H. Hunt Funeral Home, 126 Ridge Ave., Asbury Park, with Minister Juanita Harris officiating. Interment will be in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.
