Brother of the Diarist. Lacking the drive and ambition of his elder brother, John attended St Paul's School and Cambridge before taking Holy Orders. Failing to gain a preferment, he accepted a post of Clerk to Trinity House which had been arranged by Samuel, and later became Joint-Clerk to the Navy Board. He died burdened by debts which were paid by his brother, and was laid to rest in the Pepys vault.
