After retiring from Remington Arms, he returned to New Hampshire.
He was a member of VFW Post 2520. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served post World War II in Germany with the United States Constabulary, known as the "Circle C Cowboys," and in the Korean War in which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device for heroism in action.
He is survived by his wife Rena; by three sons, Thomas Phaneuf of Bridgeport; Mark Phaneuf and his wife, Deborah of Bridgeport and Matthew Phaneuf and his wife, Pamela of Claremont, NH; two daughters, Krisdina Jutras and her husband, Keith of Tulsa, OK; and Sherri Parrella and her husband, Michael of Stratford, NH; nine grandsons, Mark, Nicholas and Dean Phaneuf of Bridgeport; Brian and Shawn Phaneuf of Claremont, NH; Steven and Cameron Jutras of Tulsa, OK; Dominic and Gabriel Parrella of Stratford, NH; three brothers, Raymond Phaneuf of Gorham, NH; Rene Phaneuf of Southington, NH and Arthur Phaneuf of Stratford, NH; three sisters, Irene Judson of Berlin, NH; Rita Landry of Delaware; and Louise Phaneuf of New Hampshire.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Leo, Henry and Paul Phaneuf.
