Osage Soldier Is Airplane Victim in S. W. Pacific

OSAGE, IOWA - News of the death of First Lt. Marshall Pierce, 30, in an airplane crash in the Australia-New Guinea area was contained in a message from the department Monday to his wife, and his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Pierce, of Osage.

It was the third violent death among male members of Lieutenant Pierce's family.

His father, J. Max Pierce, lost his life in a dynamite accident five years ago.

Seven years ago his brother, Dean, was accidentally shot while swimming in the Cedar river above Spring park. It was believed that the shot was fired by hunters along shore at some object in the water.

Lieutenant Pierce was born in Osage, December 20, 1913. He had been in the army 13 years, having enlisted after his graduation from high school.

He served two and a half years in Hawaii before Pearl Harbor, and had been overseas the last year and a half.

He married Lois Sherman of San Antonio, Tex., seven years ago, and they have one son, James. They are making their home with Lieutenant Pierce's mother here. A sister also survives, Mrs. Merle Loiler, Los Angeles, California, formerly a Wac.
