Mr. Porter served as Supervisor and Assessor for many terms. He was one of the charter members of Rescue Hook and Ladder Company organized April 13, 1863. Also, one of the village trustees in 1872 when the Morton Steamer was purchased at Hudson and conveyed to Athens in the river on ice. He was a contractor and builder for many years, having built many large barns in the area. He married his wife, Charlotte C. Mead in 1856.
