Hattie, my paternal grandmother was the daughter of Eli Rufis Porte (1848-1931) and Eliabeth Barnum (1860-1899).

Hattie had eleven brothers and sisters: Mason Lloyd (1873-1938), Adeline M. (Smith)(1876-1973), Lena B. Blanchard (Barber) (1878-1964), Blanche (Powers) (1882-?), Elsie Porter (1883-1962), Pearl Clara (Barber) (1885-1932), Alice Eleanor (LaRock) (1888-1924), Harried M. (Arthur), Sherry Herman (1893-1968), Ruth (Woods) twin (1895-1984). Ruby Catherine (Clark) twin (1895-1985, Gladys Margaret (Woods) (1898-1977)

When Hattie's mother Elizabeth died in 1899 her father took her out of school at age nine to take over the roll of her mother as housekeeper, cook and sitter for her younger sisters and brothers.

Hattie met my grandfather James* while working for a hotel on Rogers Rock, Lake George, NY. He, a porter and she a pastery chef. They married Nov. 11, 1912 and together had six children. James (1913-2008), Millard* (1915-1967), Lawrence (1916-1985), Carl (1917-1986), Mary (1920-1990), Shirley(1924-1999) Grandma was a homemaker her entire life, first raising her siblings, her children then taking care of Jim* (Grandpa) when he had a stroke. After his death in 1973 she lived alone in the house on Stanley Street in Schenectady until she entered and adult home.

Eli's first wife was Julia Barnum (1848-1880). Elizabeth was Julia's younger sister. Her mother died when she was in her teens so she went to live with Eli and Julia. When Julia died Eli married Elizabeth. The first three children were Julia's.
