Family, friends and members of the community are invited to attend a public service hosted in the Leslie Middle School gym to honor Shatamera Pruden.
"That gym was her favorite place on earth," said Shatamera's mother, Elizabeth Pruden.
Shatamera was crossing the street with her 13-year-old sister to visit friends at a nearby apartment complex when she was struck by an FJ Cruiser traveling southbound near the intersection of Commercial Street SE and Royvonne Avenue on Monday, July 3.
She had passed through the first two lanes of traffic and was waved on by a driver in the third lane to continue crossing, but was struck by the FJ Cruiser in the fourth lane of traffic, said Lt. Dave Okada of Salem Police Department.
She later died from injuries at Salem Health hospital.
Shatamera had just wrapped up her middle school career at Leslie Middle School, where she was involved in student leadership and played volleyball in the school gym.
Pruden said she hopes she can use her daughter's death as a foundation for change regarding traffic safety, especially for children.
