Sala was the son of John Adelbert Read and Mary Elizabeth Barlow. He married first Margaret Annette Baumgartner, with whom he had Charles John Read. He worked in the freight and moving business allied with his father's auction house in Peoria, Illinois. After Margaret died and Charles was grown, he married Nettie Pearl Hutchinson and had Marvin Hamilton Read. He ran a grocery store in Los Angeles and worked as a night guard until his retirement.
