Hazel was the daughter of Samuel Martin Read and Cassandra Elizabeth Studer, both of California. She wed Oscar William Black on February 6, 1913 in Sonoma County, California, and in 45 years of marriage they raised four children. When Oscar passed away in 1959, she remarried after a few years to Hal McPherson who lost his wife under similar circumstances. When they eventually passed away, both returned to rest eternally beside the other parent of their respective children.
