MARY KATHERINE RICHARD BYROADE, 93, of Jacksonville, Fla., died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, in her home. Born July 7, 1915, in Monroeville, she was the daughter of Walter and Bess Richard. After graduating from high school, she graduated from Lutheran Hospital Nursing School, Fort Wayne. She married Henry "Hank" Byroade of nearby Woodburn upon his graduation from U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1937. As the wife of a military officer and subsequently a foreign service U.S. Ambassador, she lived in Hawaii, New York, Washington, D.C., China, Egypt, South Africa, and Afghanistan. During her marriage to Hank, she bore him three sons. Following a divorce in 1962, she settled in Alexandria, Va. and worked at the National headquarters of the American Red Cross, Washington, D.C. Following her retirement from the Red Cross, she moved to the retirement home now known as Summerville at Mandarin, where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a longtime member of the Mandarin Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Gene Richard (Lee) of St. Augustine, Fla., Alan Marshall of Alexandria, Va. and Jon Douglas (Lori) of Front Royal, Va.; and two grandchildren, Melissa Byroade of New York, N.Y. and Joby Byroade of Alexandria, Va. She has several surviving nieces and nephews residing in Indiana and Calif. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack Richard and Neal Richard.
