SOUTH BURLINGTON - Arthur Rideout, 81, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at The Arbors in Shelburne, following a long illness.

He was born on May 20, 1932, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of the late Arthur J. and Janet (Emslie) Rideout.

Art served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He studied electrical engineering, first at Clarkson, then earned his MS at Yale, and did doctoral work at Stanford. During his 41-year career with IBM, Art was awarded a number of patents and made significant contributions to integrated circuit design. He particularly enjoyed three years in Switzerland and a year spent at Caltech working on breakthrough microprocessor engineering. Art was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by those who knew him. Among his many interests, Art enjoyed traveling, skiing, boating, Porsche cars, playing the stock market, music, photography and visiting family and friends. He also enjoyed the beaches in Maine and fishing in Nova Scotia. He was active with Senior Net, the 55-plus Ski Club and staying fit with the UVM cardiac rehab group.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Visiting Nurse Association and the staff at The Arbors for all their support during Art's illness.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve of South Burlington; children, James Rideout and Diane Murray, Ann Rideout and Rick Mabe, Ellen and Rolando Estrugo, Karl and Jennifer Lind, Peter Lind, Eric and Kelley Lind; and 13 grandchildren. Art was predeceased by his brother, John Rideout. An informal celebration and remembrance will be held Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the family home in South Burlington.
