Son of George Rivers and Adeline Holmes (maiden name). Born at House 4, Court 12, Wide Yard, Bridge Gate, Derby, Derbyshire. Labourer at a coal agents before reenlisting in August 1914. Previously spent 12 years in the Royal Scots Fusiliers and 7 of those in India. He was unmarried.

He received a posthumous Victoria Cross for his bravery when fighting at Neuve Chappelle. He is also honoured in Nottingham Road Cemetery on his mothers gravestone, which was raised by his fellow Sherwood forester former soldiers after his mothers death on the 1st March 1937
