FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, June 4, 1966 - The granddaughter of the first permanent settler of Immokalee died Friday. She was Mrs. William R. (Flossie T. Roberts) Alexander of 850 Howell Dr., Tice. Mrs. Alexander was 81.
She was born in Fort Myers in 1884, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Roberts. Her father was a son of Bob Roberts, another early settler of Immokalee; and her grandfather, who permanently founded Immokalee, was William Allen, who settled there in 1872.
Allen moved to the interior of what is now Collier County from Fort Myers after first having settled along the Caloosahatchee River near where the Edison Estate is located. Immokalee was known as "Allen's Place" for a number of years until it got a post office and was rechristened Immokalee, a Seminole word meaning "my home."
Mrs. Alexander was one of 10 children of William A. and Eugenia Roberts. She was a member of the Pioneer Club and the Spanish-American War Veterans Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Eugenia Osborn of Tice; sisters, Mrs. Nancy L. Watson of Tice and Mrs. Gertrude Gleason of North Carolina; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funerall will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Leo W. Engelhardt Funeral Home with George C. Cobb officiating. Burial will be in Fort Myers Cemetery.
