Samuel's Civil War pension papers have a copy of his divorce from a Melissa Rose, which was granted in Chancery Court in Wexford County, MI, on 8 February 1886. We do not know if Melissa was his second or third wife. The other wife may have been an Elizabeth Rose, who was buried in the same plot. However, Elizabeth Rose may also have been a granddaughter, who appears as Florence E. Rose in the household of Samuel's son Seth in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.
