Irene (Russell) Armistead was born on July 11, 1921 in Osceola, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Luther Russell (1883-1931) and Johnnie (Kennedy) Russell (1885-1956). Her father died when she was nine years old, and as soon as she was old enough, she had to go to work to help support the family.

She was married to Bernard B Armistead (1921-1979).

Irene also worked alongside her husband at the family business - The Pullman Café; Sea & Sirlion Restaurant; Dancy’s Studio which later became Armistead Photo Service; and Montgomery County School System. Irene was also a member of the First Christian Church in Clarksville.

She passed away on March 9, 2015 at Clarksville Nursing and Rehab.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Nardy Armistead; brother James Russell; and by her sisters Louise (Russell) McCraw, Ruth (Russell) Dillon, Blanche (Russell) Crouch and Dorothy (Russell) LaValla. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law; a married son; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two 2nd-great grandchildren.

She donated her body to Vanderbilt University Hospital for medical research. A Memorial Celebration of Life for Irene was held graveside in Greenwood Cemetery on June 21, 2015.
