POQUOSON - Mary Elvira Thomas, 95, mother of Mary Virginia Forrest, departed this life on June 25, 2012, to be with her Lord and Savior. Family and friends were at her bedside. She was the sole survivor of 10 siblings born to Robert Lee Saunders and Martha Virginia Carmines. Elvira was also known as "WaWa" and "Granny." Elvira was a happy homemaker, a fabulous cook, and had many talents and hobbies. Being raised on a farm she developed a love for her fresh vegetables and her flower gardens. Sharing in her crop when ripe she would take them to family and friends and along the way meet new friends. You could not ignore her beautiful smile. She was the title holder of the fastest strawberry picker. On special days she would bake pecan rolls, 12-eggs pound cake - the real thing, and take them to those who were sick and to her family. She never missed birthdays – gifts, cards, and always a call to family to sing the "Happy Birthday" song.
Another pastime was traveling. Her first airplane ride was at 70 years when her daughter went with her to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. She was afraid of the airport escalators not the plane ride. She was lucky enough to be on T.V., meet some country stars, and get Roy Acuff's Autograph. She continued her many travels with her companion, Dave Jaynes, to include Hawaii, Las Vegas, and the Caribbean by a cruise ship. At a late date in her 80s she decided she wanted to vote in a National Election. She was the oldest person to register. A lifelong active member of Emmaus Baptist Church where she attended the Louise Quick and Willing Workers Sunday school class and worship every Sunday until her health made it impossible. She loved her church where she had so many friends and could enjoy the Christian life she so much lived. During her illness the friends visited constantly, sent flowers, cards, and talked to her on the telephone. Elvira was preceded in death by her husband, Walton Wallace Thomas; great-granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Dalheim; loving companion of 18 years, David S. Jaynes; and loving cousins. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson and other times at her daughter's home. A celebration of Elvira's life was held at 1 p.m. Friday, in the funeral home chapel by Pastor Dan Cromer of Emmaus Baptist Church of Poquoson. Burial followed at the Thomas Family Cemetery at the corner of Victory Blvd. and Big Bethel Road in Tabb. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmaus Baptist Church Renovation Project, 814 Yorktown Road, Poquoson, VA 23662 or Poquoson Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 2099, Poquoson, VA 23662. Flowers received were donated appropriately. (Ref: Daily Press from June 27 to June 29, 2012)
