Nevada First Lady. Bette's husband, Grant Sawyer, was governor of Nevada from 1959 to 1967. She met her husband in 1945 in Reno, after her family moved there from Oregon. They were married the next year in Washington, D.C., while Grant was attending law school at Georgetown University. While first lady, she compiled the history of all the Nevada first ladies and collected their photos to hang in the Governor's Mansion. Following her husband's death in 1996, she continued to live quietly in their Las Vegas home. She died after accidently cutting herself while loading the dishwasher; she passed out from the bleeding before she could summon help. She is survived by her daughter, Gail.
