Frank Sawyer passed away at his home Sunday afternoon November 15, he was 72.
An avid outdoorsman, Frank Sawyer was born in 1937 in Long Beach, California the son of Jim and Mrytle Beckett Sawyer, and moved to Spring Creek with his family in 1979. After a 14-year career with Freeport Mining as a diesel mechanic at its Jerritt Canyon operations, he retired. Mr. Sawyer served his country in the Army Reserves from 1953 to 1955 and in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He married his first wife Ethel Mae Sawyer in 1955, they were together until her passing in 2000. While living in southern California he made a living in many diverse industries including farming/ranching, commercial fishing, textiles, even with construction on the earliest portions of Disneyland in Anaheim. They adopted their only child, Frank L. Sawyer in 1966, became a grandfather in 1989, and a father-in-law in 2002. He was remarried in September 2004 to a wonderful woman Mrs. Suzanne Sawyer whom they were making a life together in Spring Creek.
Always quick with a helping hand, Mr. Sawyer volunteered whenever asked. He volunteered as a chaperone for the Elko High School Band on several occasions most notably the group's trip to the 1983 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Mr. Sawyer loved to be outdoors and most of the time could be found out in the field or out on the water. His love of hunting, fishing, dogs, and the outdoors he shared with anyone who was interested and would listen. A man who could not resist adopting strays or pound puppies, Frank loved animals and will be greatly missed by his four canine companions Charlie, Mouse, Aubrey, and Max.
Frank was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brother James Smith, mother and father-in-law Doris and Linton Copeland, and his first wife Ethel. He is survived by wife Suzanne of Spring Creek, his son Frank and daughter-in-law Stacey, and grandson Trent Thompson all of Elko, along with many friends and acquaintances.
There will be a memorial service at Burns Funeral Home at 10 AM on Friday November 20 and all friends and family are invited.
