CUMBERLAND — Helen Virginia Arthur, 85, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Country House.

Born on Oct. 28, 1926, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Leroy Scarlett and Lena Viola (McCoy) Scarlett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Arthur Jr.

Helen was a 1944 graduate of Fort Hill High School. After high school, Helen was employed at ABL. She began her career at the Maryland Unemployment Office in 1974, where she was a Claims Examiner, retiring from that position in 2002. Helen was a lifetime member of Calvary United Methodist, where she served as church pianist. She later became a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was part of the music ministry. Helen also served as church pianist at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. At Calvary, she was a member of the Ladies Bible School class. She was a member of a Bonco Group for many years and also was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, where she had served as club president.

Surviving are her daughter, Rebeca (Arthur) Golden and husband Roger, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one son, Bill Arthur III, of Cumberland; two grandchildren, Stella Golden and Lena Golden, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Nancy Rogan and husband George, of Titusville, Pa.; one brother, John Scarlett, of Cumberland; four nephews, Gary Rogan, of Celebration, Fla., John Scarlett Jr., Tim Scarlett, and Gene Scarlett, all of Cumberland; and two nieces, Susan Thomas, of Cumberland, and Karen Gale, of Titusville, Pa.

Friends will be received at the Christ United Methodist Church on Friday from noon to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Christ United Methodist Church on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr., the Rev. Floyd Bender, and Rev. Fred Iser officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions made to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research, Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY 10008-0780.

The family would like to thank Vanessa Snyder, Comfort Keepers and the Cumberland Country House for providing excellent care for Helen.
