SPRINGFIELD, IL - Margaret E. "Maggie" Scherf, 75, of Springfield, passed away at 1:02 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2016 at St. John's Hospital.

Maggie was born November 6, 1940 in Springfield, the daughter of Albert P. and Margaret Ursula Gilmore Scherf.

Maggie received a degree in journalism from the University of Illinois. She began her career as a reporter for the Illinois State Journal and Register. She was subsequently employed as a reporter for the Associated Press, first in Chicago and then in Washington D.C., ending her career as Editor of the Washington D.C. Metro Desk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother, Helen Rawlings Scherf.

Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Memorial Gathering and Memorial Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 6:00 until 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A Memorial Ceremony will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating.
