Funeral services for Mrs. Emilie Backhaus were held Tuesday morning, February 12, 1974, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig with Rev. A. Wiese officiating. Mrs. Ray Schmidt was the organist. The choir sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and the congregation sang "I Know That My Redeemer Lives".

Emilie Emma Backhaus was, born January 13, 1890, to Bernhard Schumann and his wife Marie Wind in Grant Township. She was baptized, confirmed, and married in Trinity Lutheran Church, Grant Township.

She was married to Wm., Backhaus on October 14, 1909 by Pastor R. Amstein. After their marriage, the couple farmed three miles west of Schleswig until the spring of 1943 when they retired in Schleswig. Her husband died February 27, 1966.

Because of failing health, she moved to Eventide, Denison in June 1971. She was hospitalized at Crawford County Memorial Hospital on January 5, 1974 and died there on February 10, 1974. She attained to 84 years and 27 days.

She is survived by three children: Harry of Westside, Iowa, Bernice, wife of Irwin Bruhn of Mapleton, Iowa and Ella Hamann of Schleswig; 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Schumann of Omaha, Nebraska and Otto Schumann of Sioux City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and , two sisters.
