Evelyn Schwan Hecht, 70, died Aug. 24, 1997, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a valiant battle with lung cancer.
A native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, Mrs. Hecht was a graduate of Maury High School and attended the College of William and Mary. She was a member of Ohef Sholom Temple and its sisterhood. She was a member and past co-president of the Norfolk Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women and served on its Scholarship Committee. She also served on the Audit Committee of the United Way.
Her greatest source of pride, however, was her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry L. Schwan and Lucille Hofheimer Schwan. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Joseph H. Hecht; a daughter, Linda H. Schwartz and her husband, Dr. Arnold J. Schwartz; a son, Mark H. Hecht and his wife, Katie; a brother, Henry M. Schwan and his wife, Marcia; and two grandsons, Lorin and Louis Schwartz; numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime family friend, Naomi Harrell, all of whom will miss her love, patience and guidance.
A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk by Rabbi Morrison Beal. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends at 456 Hariton Court, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday evening.
