Margaretta (Scruggs) Abernathy, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, December 8, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Robert Dewey Scruggs and Lunette (Stacy) Scruggs.

She attended Winthrop College and was a member of Southside Baptist Church where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union, the Mary Ruth Cox Mission Action Group, a teacher of the Girls Auxiliary for many years, and a member of the Class of the Open Door Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Longtime Friends Friday Club. She assisted her husband in the Spartanburg office of Senator J. Strom Thurmond.

Survivors include her husband, Warren H. Abernathy; a daughter, Dr. Marcia Duncan and her husband Dale, and grandchildren, Colin and Meredith Duncan, Warren Duncan and Elizabeth Duncan, and Hayes Abernathy.

She was predeceased by a son, Warren H. "Wren" Abernathy, II; and a brother, Solon D. Scruggs.

Funeral services were held 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by Rev. Dr. Benjamin Littlejohn, Rev. David Blanton, and Rev. Dr. Bruce Russell. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends for a Celebration of Life reception following the service at the home, 111 Hillbrook Drive, Spartanburg.

Pallbearers were Dale Duncan, Colin Duncan, Warren Duncan, Hack Cook, Weldon Dennis, John White, Jr., Ben Harrison, and Don Brock.

Honorary Escort was members of the Class of the Open Door Sunday School Class and the Mary Ruth Cox Mission Action Group.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to the charity of ones choice.
