Captain, Royal Garrison Artillery. Educated at Clifton College, Bristol. Commissioned into the Royal Artillery July 1886, promoted Captain July 1897. He had qualified as an interpreter in French. Served with the Burmese Expedition, 1885-89, receiving the medal with two clasps; with the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1890; and with the Isazai Field Force, 1892. Also served with the Waziristan Expedition under Sir William Lockhart, 1894-95, including the delimitation escort and attack on camp at Wano, for which he received a clasp. He was appointed March 30th, 1899, ADC to the Lieutenant General commanding in the Punjab, but volunteering for active service was selected for special duty in South Africa in January 1900. Died unmarried on 15 May 1900 of heat stroke and abscess of the liver at Monte Rosa Hospital, Faure St, Cape Town during the Second Anglo Boer War 1900-1902 aged 33 years.

He was initially buried at Fort Knocke, Woodstock, Cape Town. His gravestone now rests in Maitland Cemetery (See his gravestone - Find A Grave Memorial# 138384766). Initially likely to have been buried elsewhere. He is also commemorated on the Woodstock Boer War memorial in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town. He is further commemorated on a Boer War memorial at Clifton College, Bristol, England, one of 43 old boys to have died in the war (See: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Gloucestershire/CliftonCollegeBoerWar.html) and on the Royal Artillery Boer War Memorial on the corner of Horse Guards Parade and the Mall, London, England (See: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/London/RoyalArtilleryBoerWarMemorial.html).
