"The death of Mrs. Florence (Shea) Britton of this village occurred Saturday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sauer on the Fly Creek Road following a long illness. Mrs. Britton, who was 69 years old, had made her home there for the past two years. She was born in North Adams, Mass. on January 17, 1892, a daughter of Michael and Mattie (Betterley) Shea. She had lived in Cooperstown for many years, and was for a long time a switchboard operator at the old Knox School here. When the school closed, she worked for Church and Scott's. She was a member of St. Mary's Church of this village, and of the Cooperstown Criterion Club. She was married to James L. Britton, whose death occurred on March 8, 1948. Surviving are her step-father, Wallace McLean of this village, and several cousins ... Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery. Father Murphy recited the Rosary at a service held at Ingalls Funeral Home Monday night at 8 o'clock." [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Thurs., Oct. 19, 1961, Page Eight]
