Shirley May Shelby was the third of seven children born to Ruby Vestal Oliver and Raymond Earl Shelby. Her siblings were: Jessie Gay Shelby Barnett, Lascar Ray Shelby, William John Shelby, Ann Elizabeth Shelby Lewis, Frances Junetta Shelby Smith, and James Leonard Shelby. All the children were born in Laclede County, Missouri, except for the youngest--who was born after the family had moved to California.
